Description |
Framed oil painting of Osceola by Robert John Curtis. Osceola is shown facing forward with his head turned slightly towards the proper left (PL). He is dressed in traditional clothing with a white undergarment, a dark blue middle layer and an outer brown (cotton?) collared shirt with red and blue/green floral decorations. He has an orange, white and blue kerchief knotted around his neck and another blue, white and pink swirl patterned kerchief over his PL shoulder and knotted under his PR arm. He wears sash over his PL shoulder and under his PR arm that has green diamonds on a black background with white dot accents indicating white seed beads. A similar patterned sash is wrapped around his waist with a red tie over it. On his head Osceola has a wrapped turban in red fabric with blue flowers on it. Three large feathers (one white and two blue) come out of the PR side of the turban. Osceola has glass drop ear bobs on and three silver gorgets around his neck. The background shows a grey sky with a slightly pink horizon and dusty green landscape. The frame is gilded and appears to be original to the painting. The stretched canvas is held into the frame by three brass tabs. The tabs are located on the top, bottom and PR side and are screwed into the frame only. The canvas is stretched around light wood stretcher bars (pine?). The canvas is secured to the side of the stretchers with ferrous metal flat headed tacks, and to the back of the stretchers with 28 small modern flat-headed tacks. Two rectangular wooden keys hold the stretchers tight in each of the four corners. There is an additional stretcher bar horizontally across the middle of the painting. Two pieces of corrugated brown cardboard has been screwed onto the stretchers to protect the back of the canvas. The corners of these cardboards are cut away to show the framing keys below.
