Description |
The canoe is a large dug out canoe with green, blue, black, yellow and red paint layers. One of the wooden seats in the back section of the boat still remains intact. In front of this seat there are two small round holes in the side gunnels on both sides of the canoe. There are iron and lead strap repairs throughout the canoe. Seven straps of lead metal go from side to side on the canoe and are tacked on with flat headed steal tacks. There are large iron repairs in the bow and stern of the boat and smaller iron patches throughout. This canoe is the original carved canoe that sat outside of the various Okalee/tribal facilities located along US 441 in Hollywood Florida since the 1950s. Possession of the canoe was taken by the museum in 1989 when the museum was first established. In May 2005 the canoe was installed at the present Okalee branch, where it has remained since that time. |
