Description |
(1) Seminole, finger-woven beaded fob made of seed and pony beads, printed calico, and natural and indigo dyed cotton thread. The shape is narrow in the center and flares at both ends ending in five small tassles along the outside border. The linear and horizontal bead patterns are in multiple colors (white, blue, mustard, red, black). There are also single black beads on the base of all the tassles. As per the vendor object description: Beaded finger-woven fobs appear to be relatively scarce. The current example is somewhat larger than the average examples we have researched. Simple banded horizontal designs are an early design characteristic in Seminole patchwork clothing. That may suggest that these fobs with simple banded horizontal designs are early in the tradition as well? Additionally, the beaded finger woven fobs are connected with early printed calico rather than strips of underdecorated cotton cloth. It is noteworthy that the warp, weft and fringe on either side is intentionally varied from natural three ply cotton thread on one side to indigo dyed three ply cotton thread on the other side. This variation adds a subtle background enhancement to the fobs' overall design. |
