Catalog Number 1996.17.4
Object Name Belt, Sword
Description White Buff Leather 1839 Pattern Dragoon Saber Belt, oval "U.S." belt plate. This was the first white buff belt that had an oval U.S. plate. The plate seems to be a Robert Dingee (New York) plate like plate #475 in O'Donnell &Campbell with leather patch on back, but with the 1844 adaptation of replacing the iron wire hooks with "Buttons & Studs". The angular position of the 1" wide chape indicates the earliest type.
