Original presentation transmittal tube. Metal tube (presumably iron due to its magnetic attraction, possibly tin-plated iron according to historical references) used to house the Official Presidential Appointment of Major General William S. Harney on vellum (document accession #2011.14.1). The tube has a metal cap on one end. The entire outer surface is Jappaned and has a black shiny surface overall. The Jappaned surface is rust proof and would have preserved the metal tube. The identification of the tube is painted in gold paint. It reads, "Commission of But. Major General WILLIAM S. HARNEY, United States Army."
The auction documentation (see media multilink for full text) states, "This Commission by President Andrew Johnson is also accompanied by its impressive Presentation, Japanned and Gold Lettered original metal transmittal tube, complete with its original end cap".
