Model 1839 Small Dragoon or Rifleman's Cartridge Box Plate. This is a very small variation of the diminutive cartridge box plate used by the mounted arms after 1839 until the 1860's and was obtained from many contractors. The plate is 40mm x 70mm @ 1-2mm smaller than most. The thin brass shell was so thin that it has been polished through so that the lead filling is showing through in places. This plate shows hard usage, consistent with the type of wear associated with plates on cartridge boxes of mounted troops with sabers, carbines, carbine slings & other accoutrements constantly rubbing its surfaces. Both iron loops are still present on this specimen.
