Object Name Shirt
Description This big shirt was made to be worn by Seminole men. The big shirt is composed of a top shirt-like component, attached to a bottom skirt-like component by a cinched waist of three horizontal bands. The top half is 26" by 32" and the bottom is 17" by 30". The shirt component has varying sized horizontal bands of patchwork, appliqué and ric-rac from different cloths, including both cotton and silk. The skirt component is floral designed cotton fabric bordered by two horizontal bands.

The top component:
The Sleeves: The bands of cloths on the sleeves are different and not aligned with those on the body of the shirt because the sleeves were constructed separately. The sleeves are identical, with three bands of patchwork. The top band is a black and white Rain pattern. The middle is a blue, orange and yellow Tree/Telephone inspired pattern and the bottom is a yellow, blue, red and orange variation of the Rain/Storm pattern, resembling a checkerboard design. On the lowest patchwork strip on the proper left arm there is a 3" wide section of black and yellow man on horse patchwork. Appliqué and ric-rac are sewn onto the sleeves as well. Bands of solid yellow silk are the most pronounced component of the sleeve and the top half of the big shirt. Connecting the sleeves to the body is a small section of yellow cotton fabric. The cuff of each sleeve has a single button holding them closed.

The Body: There are three bands of patchwork on the body of the shirt as well. The top pattern is a black and white variation of the Rain/Storm pattern, similar to that of the checkerboard design from the bottom patchwork band on the sleeve. The middle patchwork band is a straightforward red and white Tree/Telephone pattern. The bottom patchwork band is a variation of the a No Name pattern (Fig. 3.2, found on page 92 of Art of the Florida Seminole and Miccosukee Indians by Dorothy Downs) with blue, yellow and orange patches. Bands of appliqué and ric-rac are sewn into the body as well. There are ten white buttons down the front of the shirt.

The bottom component: The bottom skirt is mainly made of a red, white and blue floral and leaf patterned cotton fabric. A horizontal red band of fabric attaches this patterned fabric to the waist of the shirt and a horizontal blue band of fabric is attached to the bottom of the patterned fabric. Both bands act as a framework for the patterned fabric.
