A northern sweetgrass basket with lid in split palmetto threaded design. The basket is short and squat in shape (24.5cm wide x 11cm tall) This is most likely a Creek basket from Oklahoma, where they use a different variety of sweetgrass. The sweetgrass appears darker and thicker than the sweetgrass used by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Instead of using embroidery floss to bind the sweetgrass coils, this basket uses split palmetto fibers in the same chevron pattern. Pedro Zepeda provided this information.
Instead of having a circle of palmetto fibers, this basket has a circular center section in the basket bottom and lid made from woven split palmetto fibers.
