Object Name Rifle
Description U.S. Model 1817 Common Flintlock Rifle Manufactured in 1824 by R&J.D. Johnson in Middletown, Connecticut, .54 Caliber. The Model 1817 was widely used by light infantry and militia in the First and Second Seminole Wars. This model was also referred to as the "Common Rifle." Because Florida's humid climate caused rust, which caused the breech mechanism to bind, it was preferred over Hall's breach loading Model 1819 rifles.
