Established in 1838, Fort Jupiter was one of a chain of forts that inlcuded Fort Pierce, Fort Lauderdale and Fort Dallas. They were built by Major General Jesup to supply his army during the Second Seminole War.

The Town of Miccosukee was located near Lake Miccosukee, northeast of Tallahassee. During the 1700s it was a town of Hitchiti-speaking Lower Creeks. These people became known as Miccosukees.
