Silas Casey to his wife Abby; He writes from Fort King E. Fla.; re: waylaying at Micanopy to meet Indians who recently attacked Lt. Martin. Includes, "We were detained for two days at Micanopy for the purpose of pursuing a party of Indians who have been doing much damage. They waylaid Lt. Martin and three men of our regiment about 4 miles from Micanopy. Killed the three men and wounded Martin in the wrist and stomach. He succeeded in escaping from them almost miraculously. On the same day Lt. Sanders went out from Micanopy with 18 men in pursuit. He attached the Indians but was routed with the loss of his own life and 6 of his men."
