Scope & Content Silas Casey to his father, Wanton Casey; He writes from Sacketts Harbour NY, re: artillery accident on Independence Day. Includes, "On firing the salute independence day one of the pieces went off while sponging. Tore one man's arm all to pieces and hurt him otherwise so that he lived but 4 days. Broke another arm in two places, and shattered two fingers so that they were amputated at the joint. The man that tended vent had the end of his finger blown off."
