Scope & Content Gates was accused of "conduct disgraceful, and behavior unworthy of a commanding officer of Military Post." The charges were brought up against him in regards to his actions in responding to an attack by Indians on Fort Barnwell in Volusia, Florida, of which he was in command. In the end Gates was found not guilty of the charge and all specifications.
