Scope & Content Silas Casey to his father, Wanton Casey; He writes from Buffalo Barracks NY; re: the state's right to restrict immigrant voting rights. Includes, "Edeavor to get off the Fla Rust...We have about 320 men here. About 60 of them were brought sick from Florida. I am in hopes of most of them will recover...I am convinced more and more, the older I grow that in order for republican government to work well, virture and intelligence must be pretty generally disseminated. The great body of emmigrans to this country are not possessed of either of these qualities. The State is perfectly right in restricting their voting privelege and in defending AT THE POINT OF THE BAYONET the exercise of that right against whomsoever may oppose it."
