Scope & Content The Galphin claim was for goods, in the amount of 9791 pounds, supplied to Creek and Cherokee Indians prior to 1773. Claim for payment passed through various hands and in 1849 the principal was paid by the Treasury Dept. In 1850 the interest, amounting to $191, 352 was paid under circumstances so unusual that except for President Taylor's death, the entire Cabinet could have been dismissed.
